SPIRITUAL LIFE

A. Why should we study the Bible?

1. To learn about God —

John 5:39
Search the scriptures;
for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

2. To grow spiritually —

I Peter 2:2
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,
that ye may grow thereby:

3. To be approved by God —

2 Timothy 2: 15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.

4. To increase in faith —

Romans 10: 17
So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

5. To learn to do good —

2 Timothy 3:16,17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furished unto all good works.

6. To edify each other —

Colossians 3: 16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

B. How can we understand the Bible?

1. By the spirit —

I Corinthians 2: 12
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world,
but the spirit which is of God;
that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

2. By prayer —

Psalms 119: 18
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

3. By daily study —

Acts 17: 11
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica,
in that they received the word with all readiness of mind,
and searched the scriptures daily,
whether those things were so.

C. What is required for salvation?

1. Faith, not works —

Ephesians 2:8,9
For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2. Faith, not rite or race —

Galatians 5:6
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision;
but faith which worketh by love.
